Our country is very vulnerable to disasters given our geographical position. We experience a lot of typhoons each year. We have many active plates that can cause an earthquake in huge intensities. Such earthquake may generate a tsunami which is threatening since we are surrounded by bodies of water. These are the hazards that may become a threat to humans if we would just shrug it off and let things be every time that a disaster will happen. We should minimize the risks (negative consequences) that may happen because of these hazards by addressing our vulnerabilities or the weaknesses of our community and also through the use of our capacities or our strengths.
It is true that we Filipinos are resilient like the bamboo. We are able to bend through those strong winds and just continue on living. But just like what our facilitator said, being resilient every time is not good in which I agree. We should not endure something that we can change. Just like the game Bahay-Bagyo-Tao, every time that there is a disaster people are struggling to find a home and there are always some who can't find any. We Filipinos should know more about the preparations for these disasters because we are the ones who always suffer from it. We should be aware of the basic things to do in emergency situations. It is a big help to know about basic life support and first aid. Not only we can help save a life but it gives that feeling that you are capable of having that superhero moment.
Our country still needs a lot of improvement for risk reduction. Though our government does not lack in reminding everyone about preparations for disasters, it is still not sufficient. Awareness is somehow the key to risk reduction. If reduction became successful, the aftermath of the disaster can be somewhat better than being caught unprepared. All efforts should be done in preparations for disasters because if we have a lot of casualties, many people will suffer given that our country is poor. Family, home, and livelihood will be damaged and it will become a huge loss for everybody.
